* * *

He was innocent. Or she...

Willow Garrison’s palm pressed against her swollen belly. The baby was too small to kick very hard yet, but she felt a flutter. More like wings than feet...

Like an angel...

Willow already had angels: two babies she hadn’t been able to carry to term. Would this baby join his or her siblings?

Tears stung her eyes and pain gripped her heart. She hadn’t lost just those babies. She’d lost her husband, too. But had she ever really had him?

Had she ever really known who Luke was?

She moved her hand from her belly to curl her fingers around the pewter frame of the picture on the mantel—their wedding portrait. Luke looked so handsome with his dark hair cut short, and his blue eyes gleaming with love as he stared down at her.

But was it really love in his gaze? He hadn’t fought to stay when she’d asked him to leave. He hadn’t fought for them. Was that because he’d already had someone else?

Louanne Brown?

She shuddered as she thought of what the woman had done to her own husband. An ER nurse, Willow had been working the day that paramedics had rushed Dirk Brown to the hospital. He’d already been dead on arrival. He had probably been dead shortly after the cable had snapped on the logging truck and cut him...

She shuddered again, and nausea rushed over her. It was the first time she’d felt it with this pregnancy. With the others she’d been so sick. But not this time...

Was that a good sign or a bad one?

She should know, but she didn’t specialize in obstetrics even though she had helped deliver a few babies in the ER. Babies that hadn’t been able to wait for their mothers to be moved to the maternity floor.

Her babies hadn’t been able to wait to be born either. They’d come too soon to survive. Because of the stress...

She’d been five months along with their first child when Luke had been called out to that wildfire in California and he and his team had lost contact for so many long hours...

During that time she’d gone into labor, and their baby girl had been too small to survive. Then nearly a year ago when that arsonist had first started his six-month reign of terror in Northern Lakes, she’d gone into labor at twenty weeks again with their son. That had to have been over the stress as well, over her fear of losing her husband, of her baby losing his father to the arsonist who’d clearly been targeting firefighters.

She wasn’t sure how far along she was now. Because she hadn’t had any morning sickness, she hadn’t even realized she was pregnant until recently, and she had yet to schedule an ultrasound.

She wasn’t sure that she wanted one...that she wanted to connect to that little image on the screen only to lose him or her again.

“You have to wait,” she murmured to this one. “You have to wait...”

Just like she’d been waiting for Luke to come back, to beg her to give him—to give them—another chance.
